I never understood gouache.
It was non-acrylic, non-watercolor. It's thick and it's thin. It went on paper as one color and dried another. As much as I loved medium giving a life of its own, this one sprang to life way beyond my control and understanding.
Last Thursday a great Art Center night teacher of mine, Robert Pastrana, mentioned the following KEY ELEMENT: "Gouache is watercolor mixed with chalk. That's all there is to it."
It's epiphany! I understand watercolor, and I understand chalk. It's like adding one plus one. I GET IT!
Tonight, I dig up some gouache I purchased years ago and started painting with it.
From here on, I will practice a lot more with this medium.
